Interesting Internship

how do you make a gif at gickr.com
free gif maker As some of you may know, I am a senior fashion merchandising and journalism student at the University of Delaware. For the past couple of months, I have interned a the Delaware News Journal, the local newspaper of my state, and it's been quite a journey. I started off the internship very strong with a feature story about Elizabeth and Kathryn Fortunato of Lizzie Fortunato Jewels You can check out that story here. It was a very fun interview because I was able to speak to girls who know what's it's like to grow up in Delaware and move out to a big city to create a successful company. The twins invited me to their jewelry party at Peter Kate in Wilmington,Delaware and it was really cool to be able to meet their families and some of the people who read the story I wrote, because sometimes you never get to see how big of an impact your story makes. I was glad that I got a really positive response to my story. My editor at the News Journal had other ideas about the story though. She said it was "mediocre" and opted to add whole sections of her own writing to the story. I wasn't very happy about that because I felt like the story wasn't my voice and turned out a little corny. When she was giving me critiques about what I needed to do to make my feature writing better I pulled out a paper to write notes and she yelled at me to look at her face. Quite rude. My next assignment was a story about the top ten trends for spring. I was excited to be able to talk to shop owners across Delaware to find out what they thought the trends were, but it proved to be a difficult story to write. Some of the shop owners wouldn't respond to my calls and it took days for them to respond to my multiple calls. When I finally got a hold of the shop owners, they didn't have the right pictures to go with the story according to my editor. When I finally turned in the story my editor hated it. She didn't give me the specific format she wanted the story in so I gave her a descriptive list of trends. She was very annoyed so I went back to do the story and she still had a problem with the pictures that I was able to get. It was like I could never win. The last story I was assigned was a story about the Common Threads Exhibition at the University of Delaware. I started the story then another editor suggested we do a double by-lined story about the exhibition. She asked me to send her notes and I did. She used my notes and didn't credit me for the story. Overall, I wouldn't say it was the best experience I've had in my life, but what I did gain was knowledge on how to deal with certain types of people. These types of experiences are good because they prepare you for how people will treat you in the real world. P.S. Please don't use my experiences to pull you away from an internship in the journalism field. Ashley

1970s Wedding Style

Photobucket

You learn something new everyday. On my quest to find the perfect dress to do a report on for my Material Culture Studies class, I found these pretty groovy (hehe) pictures of 1970s wedding style.
Photobucket
Patricia P. McDonald, University of Delaware Alumnus of the class of 1969 donated these dresses to University of Delaware's Historic Costume & Textile Collection where I volunteer on some weekdays to stay on top of my fashion history.

The info that I gathered about these pictures was that the wedding took place on Memorial Day ( May 28th, 1973), hence the red, white, and blue each gunne sax dress,a straight, bohemian style dress with a high neckline and long peasant sleeves was made out of polyester, grosgrain, and cotton lace and sewn by hand.

According to the book that I used for most of my research,“ Visual Design in Dress”, “A sense of style is possessed by those with a flair for creating beautiful combinations, for sensing what is appropriate for an occasion and for coordinating garments and accessories in a satisfying way.” I'd say these ladies did just that. Enjoy!

The Shock of My Life

Photobucket

Everyone who knows anything about fashion knows style.com is the center of the fashion world. It gives the latest fashion news and brings together stories from all over the web to inform us about what is going on in the fashion scene and I was lucky enough to be featured on their news feed! My dear friend Matt Racz of Start It Up TV shot a video of me talking about how I started my handbag line. Let me just say I am practically grasping for air right now. THIS IS UNREAL. You can see the video here !

Enjoy :)

The first time I laid eyes on Carine Roitfeld's beautiful style, was when I was about 10 years old. I was looking for the Style Network online, so I typed in "style.com" and instead I was taken away to a magical wonderland of fashion ecstasy. I browsed the site and ended up on the "people" section and I stumbled upon Carine's page. I looked for more information about this beautiful fashion creature and discovered she was the Editor-in-Chief of French Vogue. I was instantly captivated and ever since that day, Carine has been my fashion hero. I couldn't afford to buy French Vogue at 10 years old and my mother would have DIED if she caught me reading it, so whenever I had the chance to go to my local Barnes and Noble (my mother had always taken me there so she could teach me how to read when I was younger) I would sneak peeks at whatever issue they had when my mother wasn't paying attention. Of course I was shocked at how beautiful the clothes were and completely taken aback by the erotic nature of everything she did in that magazine, but I just couldn't look away. Years and years of this "sneak-peeking" ensued then I finally got a job and then BAM!!!- news broke one sad morning, that Carine is leaving French Vogue, a position that she has had for 10 years. I was floored. "Wow, this is unreal," I thought to my self. "I better get an issue before its too late!" So I rushed over to my faithful spot at Barnes and Noble and practically ran and grabbed the last issue they had on the stands of Carine's final French Vogue with Saskia de Brauw on the cover. I hugged my copy ( of course everyone around me was staring at me like I was crazy!) But I didn't care- I finally had my very own copy of French Vogue and no one could ever take it away from me. Then it was announced that Carine was going to release a book with Oliver Zahm about her career called "Irreverent" and of course I started shaking. The moment it came out on Amazon.com I ordered my copy. When it came in the mail I cried. The book was so beautiful. Carine's "lack of respect" for what my mother would call plain decency , is what has allowed her to give us some of the most powerful images that fashion has ever seen. So now I am here to give you little glimpses of the book and some of my favorite snaps of my dearest Carine.
Enjoy!
Love,
Ashley

Dress: Made in Ghana, Jacket: Walmart, Necklace and Bracelet: Walmart, Ring: Vintage, Earrings: Forever 21, Boots: Vintage

These are some old photos taken during the snowtastrophe that Delaware saw in February when the weather was much cooler. I'm not saying I enjoy the bone chilling cold of winter, but I need a relief from the smeltering heat that doesn't seem to go away. Cool weather come back please, so I can wear my cable knit sweater, colored tights, and comfy leather boots.

Love,
Ashley
